Many of you may remember Fr. Martin as he served our Cathedral parish last summer while carrying out his diaconal ministry.
Fr. Martin, an only child, is from Bien Hoa, Vietnam. After his father died while trying to flee the Communist regime, his mother raised him while working several jobs in the marketplace. Fr. Martin has always proudly referred to himself as a ‘slum-dog.’
In 2006, an opportunity arose for the young Martin to come to the U.S. to study. He was reluctant to leave Vietnam knowing the financial challenges his mother was facing. But, like a good son, he obeyed his mother and arrived in Orlando on June 15, 2006.
Father completed his final year of high school at Dr. Phillips High and entered St. John Vianney College Seminary in August, 2007. On May 11, 2011, Martin graduated with a BA in Philosophy. On August 15 of the same year, he began his theological studies at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, FL.
Martin was ordained to the Diaconate on April 18, 2015. During his final academic year at St. Vincent’s, Deacon Martin served at St. Juliana Catholic Church in West Palm Beach. He graduated from the major seminary on May 5, 2016 with a M.Div. and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Noonan on May 28 at St. James Cathedral.
“Having spent the summer at the Cathedral as a freshly ordained deacon, I enjoyed every minute of ministering to the people of St. James. Being privileged to be sent back here as a priest, I am very happy and certain that I will be able to learn much from this wonderful community. Above all else, I am looking forward to work alongside Fr. McCormick and Fr. Pardo, ministering to the needs of our people and being for them an ambassador of God’s love and mercy.”
Please join in offering our new priest a very warm welcome!
